How does historical correlation differ from causation?

Two events can be related without one causing the other. For example, ice cream sales could increase and at the same local temperatures rise. The two are correlated, because if you were to graph them they'd be roughly similar. However, you have to somehow prove that there's a causal relationship between rising temperatures and ice cream sales.
