A variable is a letter that represents another number or thing.

Steps to solve:

3x + 6 - x + 82 = 44

~Combine like terms

2x + 88 = 44

~Subtract 88 to both sides

2x = -44

~Divide 2 to both sides

x = -22

Best of Luck!
