Isolate

You isolate the variable so that we can know what the actual variable is. What it means to isolate the variable is make the variable alone on one side so that we can easily conclude that the other side is the actual value of the variable.

You wouldn't eliminate it because then you wouldn't be able to find the actual value of the variable.
