By adopting Christianity as his religion, he made it the religion of the Roman Empire. Prior to Constantine, Christianity wasn't as prominent as it is today, it was a small, albeit growing religion. Additionally, it was fairly common for the pagans to destroy churches and Christian artifacts, to say that this action put a dent in the matter would be an understatement.
